PLEASE NOTE:  CAMOUFLAGE, SWEATS AND T-SHIRTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AND YOU WILL BE SENT HOME. COMPLETE UNIFORMS ONLY.

All scouts attending Merit Badge day must have blue cards signed by their Scoutmaster.  Scouts will not be able to attend the class if they do not have this signed blue card.

FIVE- B Meet with the food service manager of a food service facility (such as a restaurant or school cafeteria) and visit this establishment. Observe food preparation, handling, and storage, and learn how the facility keeps foods from becoming contaminated. Find out what conditions allow microorganisms to multiply in food and how conditions can be controlled to help prevent the growth and dissemination of microorganisms. Learn how microorganisms in food can be killed. Discuss what you learned with your counselor. (Bring a legible signed note from the person you met with.)

SEVEN With your parent’s approval, visit your city, county, or state PUBLIC HEALTH agency or department. Bring irrefutable proof of your visit. (A signed note on stationary from the department, or a signed business card, etc.)   Important: There is no Public Health Department in Cerritos…that is a mental health department, which is different. There is a PHD in Bellflower.

SAFETY:  Afternoon Session

Read the Merit Badge Pamphlet. NOTE: You must be at least twelve years old, and First Class Rank to take this badge with me!

  1. Make a SAFETY notebook to include some from each of the following (at least ten items total):
    1. Newspaper and other stories, facts, and statistics showing common types & causes of INJURIES in the home,& in the workplace, & how these can be prevented
    2. Newspaper and other stories, facts, and statistics showing common types of CRIMES and ways to avoid being a crime victim
    3. Facts you obtained concerning the frequency of accidents and crimes in your local area
    4. A paragraph or more, written by YOU, explaining how a serious fire, accident, or crime could change your family life
    5. A list of safe practices and safety devices currently used by your family, such as safety practices used while driving or working and safety devices that prevent injuries or help in an emergency
  2. Do the following:
    1. Using the safety checklist in the BSA Safety Merit Badge pamphlet, make an inspection of your home. Bring the completed checklist with you.
    2. Develop your family’s plan of escape in case of fire in your home. As you develop the escape plan with family members, share with them facts about the common causes of fire in the home. Bring a note signed by a parent that you have done this, AND all of the following: Show your family members how to protect themselves and your home from accidents, fire, burglary, robbery, and assault.  Show your family the exits you would use from different public buildings (such as a theater, municipal building, library, supermarket, shopping center, or your place of worship) in the event of an emergency.  Teach your family what to do in the event that they need to take shelter in or evacuate a public place.  #SIX: Make an accident prevention plan for five family activities outside the home (at your place of worship, at a theater, on a picnic, at the beach, and while traveling, for example). Each plan should include an analysis of possible hazards, proposed action to correct the hazards, and reasons.
